Gonçalo Ferrão da Costa

Ecologist

Gonçalo Costa´s fascination with nature started at a very tender age with wildlife documentaries on TV. Making part of that world as a biologist, veterinary, photographer or cameraman was always his dream. In the pursuit of that goal, he graduated in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences in Lisbon in the year 2000 and since then he has been working in a wide range of projects, involving several different group species (e.g. birds, bats, wolves) exploring a variety of methodologies.

In spite of that, Gonçalo has a preference for working with predators and large carnivores, species that involve big territories, conflicts and co-existence issues with humans and human infrastructures, needing for broad scale solutions in terms of ecological methodologies and human-dimension approaches. Later he did a Master in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for developing competences in the area of cartography, mapping and ecological modelling.

Wolves have been his species of choice, working with this carnivore for almost 15 years. Besides been involved in some of the most emblematic Portuguese projects related to Canis lupus in this time period, as the Wolf National Census 2002/2003 or the Wolf National Action Plan, Gonçalo has participated in a large number of wolf monitoring plans related with human infrastructures, from highways to windfarms, from dams to electric power lines. Before joining Bioinsight, Gonçalo has worked with the wolf thematic for the public sector (Alvão Natural Park), for an environmental NGO (Grupo Lobo) and for the private sector as a freelancer.

Regarding his other passion (besides family, travel and SL Benfica), video and photo communication, Gonçalo has recently concluded General Audiovisual and Directing courses at Restart (www.restart.pt) where he has developed a wide range of skills in that area, that resulted, among other outputs, in an experimental documentary about people and wolves (see documentary).
