Guidance on avian post construction monitoring techniques for renewable energy developments with specific reference to Migrating Soaring Birds (MSB’s) in the Rift Valley- Red Sea Flyway
Bioinsight has contributed to the development of Best Practice Guidelines, providing inputs regarding the methodologies to be implemented based on many years of expertise and gathering opinions from local experts.
Renewable energy development, specifically wind and solar energy, is expected to grow exponentially in the next years in the Middle East and North Africa countries. This area is also one of the most important migration corridors for many bird species, including species of conservation concern – The Rift Valley/ Red Sea Flyway.
For this reason BirdLife, under the scope of the UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Birds Project, considered urgent to regulate and provide best practice guidance for monitoring local bird communities and through this, avoid and mitigate negative impacts on migratory soaring birds. Bioinsight has contributed to the development of these Best Practice Guidelines, providing inputs regarding the methodologies to be implemented based on many years of expertise and by gathering opinions from local experts. The resulting document will include extensive indications on post-construction monitoring techniques of migratory species, including fatality monitoring techniques and fatality estimation methods.
